Williams boss warns Mercedes off Verstappen – but why?

Williams team principal James Vowles has warned Mercedes against signing Max Verstappen, citing “a lot of downsides” despite the four-time world champion’s exceptional skills. Vowles believes Verstappen’s arrival would disrupt Mercedes’ stable environment and culture, which is currently thriving with drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.

*Reasons for Caution*

– *Current Driver Lineup*: Vowles thinks Mercedes has a “really good problem” with two excellent drivers, and replacing them with Verstappen might not be the best decision. Russell is delivering consistently, while Antonelli is on a good pathway to becoming very competitive.

– *Verstappen’s Personality*: Vowles suggests that Verstappen and Russell might not work well together as teammates due to their different personalities. This could lead to internal conflicts and affect the team’s overall performance.

– *Team Dynamics*: Signing Verstappen would likely bring added intensity and focus on Mercedes and its management, potentially altering the team’s dynamics and culture.

*Verstappen’s Future*

Verstappen’s future is uncertain due to Red Bull’s inconsistent start to the season and a potential early-exit clause in his contract. Mercedes has been linked to Verstappen, but team principal Toto Wolff has stated they’re happy with their current lineup and haven’t had discussions with Verstappen ¹ ².
